$74.99

Holga cameras, originally developed in Hong Kong in the early 80s, are known for their unique distortions such as overlapped exposures and light leaks (which renders the photos in bright, almost otherworldly colors). This starter kit comes with a firehouse red camera, film, and a great book with tips and tricks for operation and over 350 gorgeous Holga shots. We feel a new hobby coming on...

This is such a neat little camera! I've had a Holga for forever, and although I didn't buy it from Modcloth (sadly, I didn't know Modcloth existed back then!) it's still the same camera and I figured I'd tell you all a little about it. The shots taken by this camera are just gorgeous, and have a great vintage look to them! Don't use this if you want a clear, "perfect" picture - the Holga's trademarks are light leaks (white spots on the photos, doesn't always happen), blurring, and vignetting (the photo fades to dark at the edges). I use my Holga ALL the time, and it takes precious, awesome photos every time! One thing is, many CVS or Walgreens won't develop them (I don't think). It doesn't use 35mm film (normal size), it's a medium-format camera, meaning that it uses medium-format film (larger than 35mm). Some people I know send them away to get them printed, which I am pretty sure is reasonably priced. I've heard of Wal-Marts developing them. There may also be places near you that will develop them - ultimately, you'll have to check to see. Of course, if you have access to a darkroom, you can obviously develop them yourself! That's what I do. My suggestion: Definitely buy this camera if you're into artsy, vintage-looking, keepsake, one-of-a-kind photos! But make sure that you will be able to develop/print them.

Absolutely love this camera! I looked for months for a camera to take cool pics and stumbled upon the Holga. If you like funky photography and you just so happen to be poor like me, this is the one! What a great hobby that doesn't cost a fortune. Also--this comes with a book that explains the ins and outs of the Holga so you're not completely in the dark when you first use it. It even explains how you can manipulate the camera to create different effects...vignetting, color gels, etc. Creates some sweet "stoner" shots.

Awesome camera! It takes totally RAD pictures. I bought this as a wedding gift for my husband and we used it on our honeymoon in New Zealand. Pictures were so unique and beautiful! Great for a special occasion or trip. Thank you Mod Cloth!
