Studying abroad in France as an impressionable college student meant a few things to me. One was the fashion - I so admired the classic, beautiful, and yet interesting way in which French women style themselves that I began unconsciously wearing more black and higher heels. Another was the cafe culture, which made it acceptable to spend hours drinking out of tiny cups of coffee and philosophizing about life. But perhaps, most important was the food - in particular, the desserts. One fall afternoon, on a bike ride through Paris, my host family and I stopped at a small shop whose line was out the door. I curiously pushed through the throng to peek inside, and my mouth dropped open in shock at the sight of hundreds upon hundreds of macarons, the best dessert of all, in all shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors, piled nearly to the ceiling in intricate pyramids. I spent several happy hours there, sampling, smiling, and soaking in its richness. If I am ever so lucky as to return to that paradise of a patisserie, I will wear this beautiful antique blue and ivory top by British designer Darling. Its delicate lace overlay, exquisite indigo buttons and belt, and feminine detailing make it look as delectable as the caramel-beurre-salé macarons I miss so much.
