Millionaires Row Heel
In the late 1880's, my hometown of Williamsport, Pennsylvania thrived in the lumber industry and became known as "The Lumber Capital of the World." Due to its location next to a river and its proximity to densely wooded hills, many people found fortune in the trafficking of timber there. In fact, Williamsport was once home to more millionaires per capita than anywhere else on Earth. Many of these wealthy lumber barons began building homes in a Gothic Revival or a Mansard style of architecture along a stretch of West Fourth Street, which to this day still bares the nickname of "Millionaires Row." These lavish, bone-colored, leather lace-up shoes by CeCe Chin make me imagine the wardrobes of the wealthy women of Williamsport in that Victorian era. The sturdy, jewel-bedecked, hexagonal heel that looks as though it could have been a baluster top to a spiraling staircase in their elegantly embellished homes would have proved quite walkable for a stroll along the Susquehanna, and the black lace panels remind me of the dainty detailing found trimming their gowns. Their peep toe and open top would have been considered taboo at that prudish time, but today, they serve to add a contemporary touch. Combine them with a ruffly blouse, a pencil skirt, and a cameo brooch to accessorize, and you'll be brandishing a modern take on an antique style that might have made all the boys basking in Brandon Park blush! -Richard, Fashion Writer
