Neptune's Royal Court Necklace
This is a spectacular exhibition of jewelry. Strands upon strands of pearly beading resembling the fleeting foam of a crested wave trickle from neck to waist. It's a garland of majesty, an award of beauty. The grandeur of this piece reminded me of an impressive statue of the Roman god Neptune in Virginia Beach. A favorite vacation spot of my family's, the popular coastal city built the bronze-cast, 34 foot sculpture of the mythical man watching over his ocean kingdom while a nautical menagerie swims around him. I never forget how his broad hand grasps onto the shell of a graceful turtle. My dad has taken many photographs of me by this statue and none of them fully capture the size of it. Each year, March through September, Virginia Beach hosts the Neptune Festival around this sculpture. Various events at the boardwalk from live calypso music, to wine tastings, to my favorite - magicians juggling fire - add to the fun and beauty of the beach. During the festival, community leaders are elected to "Neptune's Royal Court" as the city's ambassadors for the year. What better royal adornment for a princess of Neptune's court than this luxurious necklace? Venus herself could have emerged from the sea wearing these luscious strands as Neptune observed with pride from the boardwalk. A short silver chain fastens with a lobster clasp at one side of the necklace for easy dressing and removal. The variety of pearls, from seed to pea size, mingle with shell-like flat beads, creating a wealth of texture and luminescent surface. You're bound to feel like a goddess in this divine style piece, adding serious statement to an LBD or monochrome maxi. Next time I visit the shore, I might just honor Neptune with the magnificence of this necklace. -Angela, Fashion Writer
