The Enid Jacket
With a last name like Coleslaw, you've got to have eclectic style! I find the comical sarcasm and endearing cynicism of the character Enid Coleslaw from the graphic novel and movie "Ghost World" as heart warming as this heavy jacket. The fragmented green and white pattern on this black cotton frock-style jacket from Trashy Diva reminds me of a vintage dress that she wears in the movie during a cheesy high school graduation party. My friend Shontae and I adopted Enid as a persona who best describes a part ourselves - adoring the weird and quirky things in life among the assault of sterile, pre-packaged consumerism. Thora Birch portrays Enid's punk spunk and love for the bizarre in a way anyone who grew up feeling alone in their oddities can relate to. I am definitely inspired by Enid's style, as well. Her whimsical and hard-edge style is occasionally softened by an ironic venture into 50's and 60's style dresses that are echoed in this jacket's 3/4 sleeves and shoulder to shoulder lapels. I imagine Enid would put her spare eyeglasses and Batgirl mask in the roomy side pockets hidden within the oversized skirt, feel the smooth liner cling to her like a best friend and secure the waist tightly around her as she steps onto the bus that takes her from one world to another. So, Enid, I dedicate this jacket to you, a young woman with a strong sense of who she is and who is discovering who she wants to be. -Angela, Fashion Writer
