Magicicada Earrings

$29.99 - Out of Stock

These earrings by Erica Weiner are as magnificent as the insect that inspired them. Imagine living underground for over a decade, only to emerge in the last days of summer so that you may sing the season's most beautiful song. These polished brass earrings are a life-size representation of the mysterious cicada. In the Northeastern states, a genus of cicadas called 'Magicicada septendecim' appear every seventeen years. They hatch in tree branches, then burrow themselves into the ground and live off of roots. Years later, they leave their cozy homes at sunset to find a mate, and begin the lengthy cycle again. Adult cicadas only live out in the open for about six weeks, so their time is very precious. Growing up in Pennsylvania, I experienced these cicadas' symphonic sounds a few times during my life. Thinking about those sounds at dusk makes my heart swoon, and these earrings, with their strikingly powerful wings, delicate arms, and bold eyes, are the perfect reminder of those songs. I'd wear these with a coral dress and gold bangles for an evening outing - to watch the sun set, and listen to the sharp hum of cicadas in the trees, declaring their impressive existence. -Angela, Fashion Writer

Since I am a great big insect nerd I might be a little biased in this review, HOWEVER I must say that these earrings are incredible! They're huge and spectacular, although the cicadas' legs can be a little itchy if worn for long periods of time. Also, I'm not sure if the ModCloth description mentions this or not, but the hook part of the earring is actually gold plated just in case you have allergies ;)

Hello Jacqueline! I am so glad to hear that you were able to satisfy your inner insect nerd with these fantastic earrings! They do look like they are making quite a statement when you put them on, which is great. :) Thanks also for sharing the tidbit about the gold plating, as that is a useful piece of information for those who might have sensitive skin (I know I do, and knowing this information can make a big difference!). Thanks for all your feedback!

I really love these earrings. They are quirky large, and don't look cheap. Exactly what I would look for in a cicada earring!

These are SO awesome. From far away, they look like big, classy, gold earrings. From close up, all I get is, "Is that a...." Oh Yeah. That's what you think it is. Then, people want to know if they're real. That said, my ears are stretched to 8g and I wear these through Kaos earskins. This means that whatever mystery metal the actual hooks are made of doesn't ever touch my ear, and the weight is spread out over a greater surface area, which avoids that "cheesewire" effect. I find this to be a totally ideal way to wear most big heavy beautiful hook style earrings, and suggest it to everyone! You can see the earskins in the close up photos, but nobody has ever noticed them from far away. Overall, I love these earrings, they were the only thing in my first modcloth order that I didn't have to return or exchange. Someone actually asked if she could buy them off of me at a bunny grunt concert last weekend.
