I have a faded Polaroid photo of my parents sitting on a crocheted blanket in the front yard of the home I grew up in. Picture Peachtree Drive in the 70s - my mother wearing a cream linen top, like this one, that she bought during their honeymoon in Tijuana the summer before. In the photo, she's a cool angel with her wavy golden hair, flared jeans, and aviators. She has a glow I've never seen before as she gazes at my father who looks straight at the camera, his jawline strong and shoulders relaxed. They were nothing-can-stop us newlyweds in the new home they purchased on the farm-rich outskirts of a society they were headstrong on not conforming to. Upon moving to San Francisco, I wonder what flecks of them are wound tightly into me, my occasional objections - my heart-shaped pupils and need to be where progressive energy is. I keep her shirt safe in my closet as evidence of an era where field laying and young love embody endless possibilities, pulling it out occasionally to touch it's soft, worn threading.
